THE CHALLENGES OF A NEW MANAGER
Focus of the mentoring process

Purpose : As an entry level or mid level manager/supervisor it is important for you to: (1) feel comfortable in the job; (2) develop and enhance leadership skills; (3) excel in job performance; (4) eventually get promoted.

Target Audience: My specific focus is on you - the entry level and mid level manager. Although there may be specifics to your company, many of the expectations of a manager are the same.

Focus: As a new manager, you will be able to transfer some of your current skills into your new job. However, there are many new skills that need to be learned. Your job is not an easy one. It can often be difficult to manage people, build a team, meet deadlines and please upper management. You are now the leader that your team will look to for guidance. You may need to make some tough decisions. You will not be able to please everyone. It is helpful to have a mentor that can help you through this process.

Here are some of the things that we can do together:

  • Review your current job environment and requirements of the job.
  • Lay out major questions/issues/themes/goals
  • Decide on priorities
  • Set goals and dates for accomplishments.
  • Develop the steps needed to accomplish goals.

We can also look at specific subjects to enhance your job performance:

  • Getting comfortable in a new role
  • Team building
  • Developing procedures, goals and deadlines
  • Generating enthusiasm
  • Gentle confrontation and constructive criticism
  • The "sandwiched" manager - meeting the needs of your boss and your team
  • Understanding diversity
  • Forging a vision
  • Work smart - Focus on efforts that will bring the most returns (rewards)
  • Coping with Change
  • Letting go of your fears - you don't have to know everything
  • Communicate, communicate, communicate
  • Looking at the micro and macro levels
