Purpose

This is an instructional web site to guide social workers and other mental health professionals in hiring a web site designer to design a professional web site.  

At the end of the guide, it is anticipated that you will know all of the questions to ask when hiring a web designer and you will know the general answers to expect. The overall performance objective is for you to hire a web designer that will produce a high quality web site.

After reading this guide, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire to determine what you have learned and to obtain any suggestions you have to improve the presentation.  

 
Introduction

This project was developed after reviewing over 50 professional web sites of social work practitioners and educators.  Design and navigation of these web sites were extremely poor and were not of professional quality.  

A professional web site is your living resume for the world to see.  It is important that it have a professional quality which will enhance the desire of the viewer to bookmark your web site and use your services.  It is therefore suggested that you hire a professional web designer to design your web site. Your web designer could be a college student or even a high school student if she has had experience designing web sites on a professional basis.

On this site there are 10 questions to ask when interviewing a web designer.  Read each question and click on the answer.  If you learn all of the questions to ask, know the general answers to expect and review all of the references then you should be ready to hire a web designer.

Preparatory Steps

Prior to hiring a web designer you must take the following preparatory steps.  The web designer's response to your questions will depend on these preparatory steps. 


1. You must decide the purpose of your web site. 

2. You must identify the target audience. 

3. You must write your web site text. 

4. You should explore a number of professional social work and related web sites.

5. You should have some idea of the type of web site that you want and some design ideas.
